Zanzibar

Zanzibar is where beaches, Swahili culture and the Indian Ocean come together. The archipelago is famous for white-sand beaches and turquoise water, but there is much more to discover. Stone Town’s winding streets tell stories of African, Arab, Indian and European influences, while spice farms, coral reefs, forests and fishing communities reveal another side of the islands. It is a destination that can be as relaxing or as adventurous as you want it to be.

Our Take

Zanzibar is not just a beach holiday. Yes, the beaches are the obvious draw. Nungwi, Kendwa and the quieter south-eastern coastline around Jambiani offer different versions of the island experience, while the surrounding waters are ideal for snorkelling, diving and boat trips. But Stone Town is what gives Zanzibar its depth. Walk through its narrow streets and you will see the influence of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European cultures in the architecture, food and everyday life. Stop at Forodhani Gardens in the evening for street food, explore the old fort and spend time simply getting lost in the historic centre.

Then leave the coast behind for a few hours and visit a spice farm. Cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and cardamom are part of Zanzibar’s history and identity. Seeing where these ingredients come from makes the island’s food culture feel much more tangible.
